Building Community Through Outdoor Learning

May 9, 2024

Why Community Matters

At TrailBreak Journeys, learning extends beyond academics—it’s about connection. Midway through the semester, we’ve witnessed incredible growth in our students’ collaborative spirit.

Highlights from Recent Weeks

  • Group challenges using outdoor materials

  • Lively debates about wildlife stewardship

  • Team projects, like constructing shelters from found branches

Through trust exercises and problem-solving games, kids are learning to communicate, listen, and lead. The closing circle has become a safe space for reflection, where victories and struggles are shared openly.

Insights from the Field

“I feel like I can talk here in ways I never could at my old school.” —Jordan, age 11

“Every week, our group gets a little closer. Now, I look forward to teamwork days the most!” —Sara, age 9

Looking Ahead

We are excited for upcoming family field trips and our capstone projects. Watching each learner find their place in our outdoor classroom has been the most rewarding aspect of this journey so far.
